It’s that time of year again and despite the cold weather, flu and shorter days, having Christmas on the horizon should give us all a lift.
For those on a budget (especially if you missed out on the Black Friday sales), you may want to consider the cost saving benefits of DIY Christmas gifts. They really do tick all the boxes – cheap, personal and if you are considering making kefir to giveaway, healthy too.
Making homemade kefir cheese, kombucha or fermented veg could be the ideal gift for someone who is hard to buy for. It's also a great option for that foody in your life, the health geek or your unhealthy teen who currently exists on junk food and video games! The health benefits of kefir are widely documented – so this is the perfect time of year to give a health boosting gift to the people you love.
Making kefir at home is easy – it really is much easier than you might think.
You can read about how to make kefir but for those who want to see how easy making water grain kefir is, checkout our video below.
STEP 1
Put the water kefir grains into the jar and fill it with fresh, non-chlorinated and non-filtered water. Add sugar (optional).
STEP 2
Open the top lid of the jar in order to allow the air flow needed for the fermentation. Leave it at room temperature for about 1-2 days.
STEP 3
When the process of primary fermentation is finished (after approximately 1-2 days). Remove the top lid and strain the kefir into glass jar/bottle. The grains will remain in the Kefirko jar.
STEP 4
After the kefir is strained you can add some fresh citrus or mint if you wish. You can then seal the bottle and leave it in the fridge for another day for second fermentation.
Gifting your DIY kefir recipes
Once made, you can store your kefir cheese, kombucha, fermented veg – whatever you like - in decorated jars to giveaway as Christmas gifts. We would always recommend labelling your jars clearly with the date your kefir was made, and of course list all ingredients used.
Cost saving, health boosting gifts for family and friends. What's not to love?
